What is PMP?

PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is a globally recognized credential offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is a testament to a project manager’s expertise, knowledge, and competency in effectively leading and managing projects. PMP Requirements

Educational Requirements:

  1. Secondary Degree (High School Diploma, Associate’s Degree, or Global Equivalent):
    • A secondary degree is the minimum educational requirement for PMP certification.
  2. Four-Year Degree (Bachelor’s Degree or Global Equivalent):
    • Individuals with a four-year degree require fewer project management experience hours compared to those with a secondary degree.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  1. Secondary Degree Holders:
    • Minimum of 5 years (60 months) of non-overlapping project management experience.
    • This experience should include 7,500 hours leading and directing projects.
  2. Four-Year Degree Holders:
    • Minimum of 3 years (36 months) of non-overlapping project management experience.
    • This experience should include 4,500 hours leading and directing projects.

Project Management Education:

  • In addition to the above requirements, all candidates must have completed 35 hours of formal project management education. This can be achieved through formal education courses, workshops, or training sessions in project management.

Application Process:

  1. Create a PMI Account:
    • Candidates need to create an account on the Project Management Institute (PMI) website.
  2. Complete the Application Form:
    • Fill out the PMP application form online, providing details about your educational background, project management experience, and project management education.
  3. Application Review:
    • PMI reviews the application to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria. Candidates may be selected for an audit to verify the accuracy of the information provided.
  4. Payment of Exam Fee:
    • Upon approval, candidates need to submit payment for the PMP exam.

About the PMP Exam

PMP Exam Overview:

  • Duration: The PMP exam is a four-hour long test.
  • Question Format: The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions.
  • Question Type: Questions are a mix of scenario-based and knowledge-based questions, testing candidates on their application of project management concepts in real-world situations.

Exam Content:

  • The exam is based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide), which is a comprehensive guide published by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Find Examination Content Outline Here.
  • It covers five domains: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing.

Exam Locations:

  • The PMP exam can be taken at Pearson VUE test centers globally.
  • Additionally, PMI offers an online proctored testing option for those who prefer to take the exam from the comfort of their own space.

Pass/Fail Determination:

  • The passing score for the PMP exam is not pre-determined or disclosed by PMI. It is based on a combination of the difficulty level of the questions and the candidate’s overall performance.
  • Candidates receive a pass or fail result immediately upon completing the exam.

  1. Study Materials:
    • Utilize the PMBOK Guide as the primary study resource. Additionally, PMI recommends other reference materials for a more comprehensive understanding.
    • Explore various PMP exam preparation books, online courses, and study guides.
